German Court Intervenes When Parents Decide To Name Their Baby 'Lucifer'

A couple in Germany wanted to name their baby Lucifer until government officially got involved in the issue.

An unidentified pair of parent in the city of Kassel submitted paper works to their new born son Lucifer, According to The Associated Press. An official in the presence office however, refused to sign off, and referred the couple to the district court, which would decide if the name was acceptable.


In Germany parent have the right to choose the kind of name they want to give their babies, officials can intervene if the name would endanger the child's well being by exposing them to mocking by humiliation or  being offended from friends later in school or wherever they find their self.

The registrar in Kassel was concerned that the name Lucifer could adversely affect the child for those reasons. Although the name technically means "bearer of light," its generally connotes Satan and evil.

Court spokes person told Matthias Grund told the local news paper that the parents in this case changed there mind after a closes door hearing.

Meanwhile the name Lucifer is banned in some countries, including New Zealand.
