Bail Set At $2 Million For Los Angeles Man Who Allegedly Took Hostages In A Trader Joe's And Killed An Employee

A man who allegedly killed an employee at a Trader Joe's in Los Angeles' Silver Lake area during a tense standoff with police is facing one count murder and his bail has been set at $2 million.

Police identified the man as 28-year-old Gene Evin Atkins. He was originally wanted for shooting his grandmother and a young woman, according to CNN. Atkins was fleeing from police when witnesses said he crashed the car he was driving near the grocery store and shot at police before running in there.

About 40 people were inside the store when the three hour standoff stated. Ultimately it was shared that Atkins killed a store employee. The news was announced during a news conference held by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Atkins was wounded by police gunfire and surrendered, ending the ordeal.

Six people, including a 12-year-old, were taken to the hospital after standoff but none of their injuries were life-threatening.
